Quantum Computers are already here....



• Quantum computers have the potential to be exponentially more powerful than today's classical computers by harnessing the peculiar laws of quantum mechanics. They could solve problems that are currently unsolvable.
• Several companies and governments are racing to build a useful quantum computer, including IBM, Google, Microsoft, and China. Billions of dollars are being invested in quantum computing research and development.
• Quantum computers work by using quantum bits or "qubits" that can represent a 1, a 0, or both at the same time. This phenomenon of superposition gives quantum computers their potential computing advantage over classical computers.
• Building stable, error-corrected quantum computers is extremely challenging. Qubits are very fragile and susceptible to errors from outside interference. The largest quantum computers today have around 50-70 qubits. Experts estimate around 1000 high-quality qubits will be needed for a useful quantum computer.
• Potential applications of quantum computing include developing new batteries and drugs, optimizing global logistics, and breaking through encryption standards. However, quantum computers will not surpass classical computers for every task - for most applications today a classical computer is still better.
• It's a race to both build a useful quantum computer and find practical applications. If successful, quantum computing could drive major innovations and economic benefits. However, the challenges are also immense and it may still be decades before quantum computers revolutionize computing in the way that many expect.
